Brown Bag Lunch Sketch Your Proposal: Detecting Mathematical Reasoning Through Gesture and Movement: Toward a Multimodal Assessment Platform.

Our next Brown Bag Lunch, Sketch Your Proposal session is happening Monday, April 13, from 12:30-1:30 PM in the Collaboratorium (IRIC 352).

How do students communicate mathematical reasoning they can’t yet put into words?

Join the conversation as Angela Crawford, an Assistant Research Professor of STEM Education, investigates behavioral signals, such as gesture and student-generated inscriptions, of proportional reasoning sophistication in middle school students during her Sketch Your Proposal, Detecting Mathematical Reasoning Through Gesture and Movement: Toward a Multimodal Assessment Platform. The long-term goal is a technology-mediated assessment platform capable of automatically detecting reasoning quality through multimodal behavior — moving beyond written products to capture thinking in motion.

Those with backgrounds in computer science, cognitive science, signal detection, and modeling are especially encouraged to come and share thoughts on how this system might be developed. Crawford is also interested in hearing from researchers in fields where detecting behavioral signals or assessing reasoning processes may raise questions or possibilities not yet imagined.
